Kent Wunderlich, longtime board member and 1966 alum of Memphis University School, passed away on Feb. 7, 2026.
Having graduated from the University of Virginia in 1970 with a Business Management major and B.S. in Commerce and acquiring his Juris Doctorate (1973) from the University of Memphis – then Memphis State University – Wunderlich boasted a career in both the law and business sectors.
Wunderlich joined Baker Donelson in 1973 and quickly rose to a partner, specializing in commercial real estate. Following Baker Donelson, Wunderlich joined Financial Federal Bank as general counsel, serving for 39 years and eventually becoming CEO and chairman of the board. His work with Financial Federal led to his 2020 induction into the Society of Entrepreneurs.
Wunderlich was a lifelong Memphian, and as such, gave back to the Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, the Boys and Girls Club of Memphis, the Nature Conservancy of Tennessee and Neighborhood Housing Opportunities Inc.
Moreover, Wunderlich served for 25 years on the Memphis University School Board of Trustees, where he served for nine years as chairman.
In his day-to-day work life, as highlighted in a 2012 MUS Today column, Wunderlich integrated MUS values into the Financial Federal workflow. Wunderlich stated that, “[Financial Federal tries] to do things the right way and follow a ‘do right’ principle that includes integrity and loyalty in all of our business dealings… I learned that at MUS.”
Wunderlich’s legacy lives on at MUS and the city of Memphis through his extensive work with the school and community, lifelong pursuit of Memphis-based excellence and desire to approach each relationship with authenticity.
